Case 300 Brake seal

So there is a Case 300 that I have been working on with some buddies at our local career center, and we have been having some issues with it. Right now we have the tractor split, and one of my buddies has been working on the brakes while I have been installing the clutch. The issue we are having is that when we try to install a new brake seal, it rolls the edges over and trashes the seal. Theres the possiblilty it's the seal we got, which came from napa, but I really have no idea what it is. A local Case guy suggested wrapping it with wax paper but that didn't work, and we have tried greasing it before trying to put it in, but that doesn't work either. So what I was wondering was, is there any special way to install those seals, and should I try out a seal from Case, even though they are $37 each? Thanks in advance.

I've used CR seals from Napa, make sure Napa is giving you the right seal. Case original p/n G10689 sub to A39273 sub to A49796. maybe more p/n change later. First 2 Case p/n cross ref to CR seal 22336.

I wrap tight with cheap electrical tape, wrap slight overlap so tape ridge is facing inboard. I use warm STP for lube, KY jelly is good too. Cheap China tape like Harbor Freight and probably Home stores sell is thinner and stretches even thinner.

I have heard of HD tinfoil and stretch wrap (like Saran wrap) being used successfully. Also shim stock and better aluminum soda/beer cans cut and wrapped. lots of choices, all and none work at times.

Try a sheet of shim stock and grease it up with while lithium grease, STP, or Vaseline. It may take three hands to get it put together, so have an extra person on hand in case you need help. BTW, grease the inside of the seal too.

Joe(WA) nailed it. I have found the electrical tape works best. The problem with the shaft is that where the seal shoulder is, there is no champher, it is a sharp edge that tears the seal lip. Be careful not to start the tape wrap in too far, so that you don't flip the seal lip when you remove the tape. Personally, I prefer the National Seal, which is what we stock & sell at a 1/3 of the CASE price.

Agree with John on the National seals, switched a few years ago and not going back to CR.

Cut the bottom off of a 16 oz plastic soda bottle the barrel of the bottle will just fit over the
smooth part of the shaft and the seal will slide on from the cap end , use some lube workes for
me.JIM

Thank you for all of the replies. I will try the electrical tape first with a Napa seal since they are cheaper. Hopefully, this works so I can have the tractor up and running before the end of the month.
