VA intake tube ice cold

after i start my VA and run it for about 5 minutes it dies, the intake tube above carb is really cold . what causes that, what can i check or do to stop it.?

That is normal and a fact of how things work. It is caused by the atomizing of gas in the carb which in turn causes things to get cold and can get so cold as to cause icing up of the carb and manifold. That is why older cars and trucks had a tube hooked up so as to pull heat off the exhaust manifold so send warm air into the carb so t would not happen. One can rig a cover to do the same thing or live with it and after it warms up the problem should stop

Mine will sometimes even frost up, has never caused it to die and after awhile it goes away. my experience. gobble

I put a "U" shaped piece of flashing over mine (open in back) to collect heat off the engine block. I read somewhere that adjusting the valves would help. I don't know why.

Mine ices up pretty well when it's cold and damp out, but once the exhaust gets good and hot and the heat transfers to the intake it goes away. It doesn't want to run smooth until that happens but I keep it set pretty lean for an old tractor. There isn't a lot you can do that'll make much difference except warm it up. Parking it in a heated area might help but most of us don't have that option.

I have found that when the manifold above the carburetor frosts up, it makes the engine run rich due to frozen clumps of gasoline going into the engine. If you shut off the engine for a few minutes, after the manifold frosts up, then restart the engine it will thaw it out in a few seconds.
