2290 case

One sitting on a lot here. Very clean tractor 5000 hours. I'm basically needing some cheap horse power. Anything to look for or stay away from?

If you are not familiar with the series I would recommend you to find someone at a old time Case dealer in the shop who has hands on experience and have him thoroughly check it out , an old timer will know how to evaluate the powershift and tractor hydraulics without a truckload of tools and equipment and you will be well ahead of the game even if you have give him a few bucks for his time and knowledge. If in good condition they are a great tractor but they are getting older. In addition , would be wise to check the engine oil for signs of antifreeze as I am hearing of sleeve seal orings on all series of engines not just 90 series

The 2290 was offered with either a power shift or an 8 speed manual. Which is it? Are you familiar with Case? If so, the 8 speed manual version could be considered as the second upgrade of the 1170-- the 1175 being the first upgrade. It is hard to go wrong with the simplicity and durability of the 8 speed manual. The power shift could be expensive to fix.

The 2290 has the 504 turbo engine where as the 1170 and 1175 has the 451 turbo. I believe the 2290 has the lowest setting for the 504 turbo ---about 130 hp. The 2470, 2670 and other models pushed this 504 arrange to much higher horse powers.

I would pull the engine oil dipstick with the engine idling and check the compression blow by. If the oil pressure is good also at idle when up to temperature and the blow by is low the engine is probably in pretty good shape---barring an antifreeze leak.

I have an 1170 and it has been a good work horse. I am watching for a 2290 with an 8 speed manual and a good air conditioner. My 1170 does not have an air conditioner and I am too old to not have an air conditioned cab. LOL
