801b Gauge cluster progress

Well, I have things disassembled on both my 800 series tractors. I guess the goal is to (initially) get one good working cluster from two. I've started cleaning with toothbrushes (oh joy) and testing the gauges to see what works and doesn't.

I'll have to see what I can replace with new vs rebuild. The one bad gauge so far; the hour/rpm gauge on the left has a broken drive shaft...doesn't look like an easy repair.

Anyway, I'll appreciate any comments and advice!

Looks good! Are you restoring the round gauges? Evergreen restoration sells beautiful repos as good as the original with glass faces black/brown backgrounds. I've bought a set and they are very good.

I never had one apart, so watching for your updates, I do know one of mine has moisture inside of it so I need to tackle that eventually.

I took one of the destroyed round gauges apart yesterday as a test...boy what a chore. I probably don't have all the right tools (?) but it did come apart. Not sure it's worth the time and effort!

I'm likely going to re-use the round gauges as is. They are in OK condition and I'll replace the destroyed ones with new units.

Basically, I'm trying to create one good gauge cluster/dash for this spring and then take time to complete the other gauge cluster/dash for the second tractor next spring. I only have so much $$$ in the 'wife approved' tractor expense account and I have a lot of other small parts to replace.

I'll take a look at Evergreen. Never heard the name before so that sounds like a good lead.

So I've mocked up the gauge cluster with my clean up and first paint touch up. I've verified all the gauges work, and all the needles are painted, but I have more painting to do on the main face-plate to match the brown.

I don't have replacement stencils so I'm just going to touch up the brown paint by masking off the white lettering as closely as possible. It's a pretty close match and good enough for a working tractor. Not the professional job you can pay for, but I have only my time invested so far.

Then I'll have to move onto the the other gauge cluster and repair some needles and the hour/rpm unit. That may be a bit trickier.

Not bad for a days work...

Was that supposed to be brown? I thought it was supposed to be black on my OEM cluster, but it is so rusty it's hard to tell. The glass has a rust line about 2/3 of the way up.

Brown is gas, black is diesel.

I must be wrong on that brown/black assumption. Looking at Case801-B's gauge board the oil pressure gauge appears to be 0-60 psi like diesel tractor. Gauge board on 800B may have been brown on both gas & diesel? I seem to remember a some changes when the tach sweep was changed from right-left to left-right? Anyone know?

Can't say I know, Joe, but I think the CCW tach started with the COM as the tach drive is in the torque tube on them. It was the deciding factor for me going to an electronic tach, my drive gear is wasted and according to John Saeli NLA.

CCW tach was the original, pics are 1956 310 and 1959 311B. I think change to CW tach happened model 700B ??? and higher.

I read previously that brown was a Stewart-Warner gauge cluster at a second Case factory and black was done by another vendor at a second Case factory. Maybe that doesn't apply to all tractor models?

Both of my 800's are diesel and have brown gauge clusters. Both have "Stewart-Warner Corp" branding stenciled along the top of the gauges in very small lettering as shown below.

That should read "at one Case factory...a second Case factory". I believe the SW gauges were all installed Rockford plant and the other vendor (name ?) at Racine plant.

Well that is in part correct. It has been quite a few years but I took this black paneled cluster board off what looked like an early 530 diesel at a salvage yard. The gauges were all SW. I used them over the years to repair regular brown cluster gauge boards as I know I have never repaired a black paneled board. This ammeter is all that is left.

Rather than panel color it may be possible you are referring to a manufacturer other than SW that made cluster gauge boards for Case during the 60's 70's and maybe later, ACDelco comes to mind but I just don't remember who that was as my experience other than a few early 430 & 530 is mainly 1959 and earlier.
