Reluctant VAC Work

I have been wanting to do this for awhile but have been dreading it. The tractor wobbles badly in the rear when driving in 4th down the road and really bothers me and looks like poo in the process. When I restored the VAC I was either too lazy, too cheap, or both and did not put new carriage bolts in the axle clamps on the wheel hubs. Because of this I believe I did not get a good and even clamp on the axle shafts on both wheels. So, I need to remove the outside wheel weights, tires/rims, wheel hubs, and finally the inside weights to get all 8 carriage bolts out to replace them with new. It has actually come apart really well so far and I only smashed my finger once. The hardest part so far was getting the rear end lifted to set on the floor stands. I have the inside weight set pried away from the hubs just far enough that I think I can still get the carriage bolts out but we will see. The nuts on the bolts are STUCK GOOD.

While I have it all apart I am going to set it up so the hubs are on the inside of the rims as opposed to outside like they were before. It should still be the same wheel spacing and only require swapping wheels each side and sliding the hubs in more.

Im glad this is only for a VAC and nothing larger!

Some times the simplest of projects turn into a full blown event. Plan A,and plan B. I'm glad you chose plan B Ben.You will be happier with the outcome. My project involve removing the front bolster on the 411. Been there done that! CM

It will be nice having it buttoned up and running right Chuck. I will enjoy driving it more and maybe I can convince my wife to do some more summer riding on the buddy seat.
