anyone know what the difference is on the head based on the stud holes below each sparkplug? could it be the year? both are stamped VT-148.

They are factory casted just on the four holes. i'm trying to find out when they were casting
them that way, earlier or later

You got me curious, as I recently acquired a VAC, so I went and looked.

If I saw correctly, my head is different than both pictured!

Directly under each spark plug is a raised area, but it does not continue out to the stud/hole area, as in your picture.

Your clean/painted head shows no raised area at all.

The parts books show 3 different heads for the VA series. An early head and later gas and low cost fuel heads.Look for casting numbers. I have seen the VT 148 on top of the head near the valve cover. The later numbers appear to be VT 148 for gas and VT 159 for low cost fuel. The early number looks to be VT 121. The combustion chambers will be bigger on the low cost fuel. Nick
