Copied Serial Number

Just ran across an ad on ebay for a case tractor that has the same serial number on the tag as one I have. Theirs is obviously a stamped reproduction. I am certain that the one on my tractor is original and have had the tractor several years. It is the correct model so it makes me think they did some research to get it correct. It is in the VA series. Should I contact them or just not worry about it. I know these are not high priced tractors but it still is a little irritating. Thanks Lee

Agree contact them and get their response and repost your reply, I would be irritated also.

Im not trying to rustle any feathers here guys but if their tractor came without and they wanted one to add to the tractor they may have just looked up the SN list and chosen a random one from the appropriate year. It was just chance that they used yours. The alternative is just to go without or make up a ludicrous number (EXP999999) or something of that variation. Of course if you think they are trying to defraud you then you should have the right to ask them to change it. Personally, for my VAC there is no build card for it (I asked) so I have no proof that the SN tag is legitimate or taken from another similar tractor or even if the tractor was put together from two or more tractors and I am not worried if someone copied my SN. The chances of the police stopping me to compare my SN with one that was stolen or vice versa are so low.

I'm sure that if you post pictures of your tag and the one in question, to compare side by side you should be able to tell which one was factory or not. Most likeley the size of the numbers and letters will be off some what. JMO

I think the your serial # is someplace else on the tractor to verify yours, but also ago with the other poster talking about the letters and sizing.

You can fix that for $50, see ebay auction #362474329590. ;-)

Unfortunately on the VA series the tag was the only place they had the number. As you can see the letters don't match in size to the numbers but they don't on hardly any of the ones I have. I do have more in this time frame with the large letters as this one has including another early VAH and a VA. The fact that the numbers all are inline and equally spaced leads me to believe this is original. It really isn't a big deal except I find it hard to believe that they got it on the right version considering there wasn't very many VAHs made. I have sent an email to the seller asking how he came up with the number on his. Pretty sure his is not factory because the numbers were stamped individually and some are slanted and don't line up with the others. Don't know how to copy and paste to add a picture of his. Lee

Before you get to excited, you might want to think maybe the other guy is thinking the same as you. How did you get his number? It might just be that someone else messed it up and is neither your fault or his. Might be worth your time to check it out before you jump.

Got a reply back from the owner of the tractor. He said the tag was missing but a manual came with it with this serial number on it so they stamped it on a new tag. Apparently that manual and the tractor I have were at the same place at some point. Really wasn't a big deal. Just wondered why they ended up with this number on a repo tag. Lee

I just have to say that out of all the serial numbers out there, that it is an amazing coincidence that not only did this happen, but that you actually caught it.
I've wondered a bit about this when I've seen that they make reproduction tags.

I have to agree with you D Case Guy. The odds are unreal that happened with his machine let alone he discovered it. Shoulda played powerball the other day.

THose blank tags are for sale. If someone goes through the trouble of buying one, it would seem they would go through the trouble to have it stamped. Probably a lot more of them out there, pretty amazing they crossed paths.
