351 the tach spins!

Figured I would give all an update on a new post as the other is quite long and 3 pages back. Got the tack spinning when i twist the collar in back. I have a cable from John Saeli. Hoping the gear is on the tach drive when i look. When the manual was written, it said to lube the tach and speedo cable with lithium grease. Now that was 1957. When I was working in a gas station in 1969 we were selling tubes of speedometer lube and I think that was graphite. Have a century has passed since then. I was wondering what is the latest goop to use, or if I should stick with lithium

It almost doesn't matter what you use to lube it, so long as you do. I've had good luck with the spray white lithium grease that comes in a can, you can just shoot it down the casing with a straw. I knew one guy that swore by ATF, said it automatically made it run smoother. Moly grease seems a bit thick to me, but I could probably use it out here in Arizona. WD40 doesn't stick around long enough. Graphite won't give any rust protection unless it's in an oil or grease suspension. But like I say, the most important part is not to neglect it. Good luck with your gear; mine was run with a stiff cable so long that the centers of the gear teeth are now missing and not touching the gear in the torque tube, and it's NLA. I now have an electronic tach.

It would be nice to have either the speedometer or the tach. Right now I have an extra drive for the speedo so I am pretty sure I will have that.
There are used tach drives out there for a c note.

I use graphite and regular 10-30 engine oil. Loosen the nut at the tach drive end. Alternate graphite and wash oil from a hand pump oil can at the tach end until it comes out at the drive end. Run the engine to spread and mix.

The tach & speedometers work on both my 300/300B tractors. The tach is very useful but the speedometer is pretty much redundant as I seldom can or want to drive over 6-7 mph on my property.

What penetrate did you use to free up the tach? I have been using PB Blaster lately but always looking for something better.

i used pb blaster. There is a new product I was thinking about using which is something that comes out of the can super cold. It is so cold it is supposed to shrink what ever you spray. I have used it on bigger bolts. It really only works when you can get the spray on the male part of the problem without getting it on the female part. At least that's how it seems to work for me. If you spray everything it should all shrink so I don't see you are helping the problem. I would guess it would make the parts more brittle as well. As for the tach I had first used liquid wrench penetrating oil because I was out of PB. It was about 4 days after switching that it came loose. Hard to say it was the 4 days of PB and not the whole week of soaking using 2 products.

found a tach drive tonight for about 55.00 shipping included. Maybe I paid too much but I got the speedo drive for $10+ so it evens out.

So when I put the gauges back in, there is a gasket and it is in a couple pieces. DO I need to cut a new one or can I use form a gasket? THe question is if moisture in the guage set is an issue. Form a gasket would keep it out better, but if any got in, a real gasket would let it wick out...or so it seems to me.
