I made a handy little non sparking tool to lift the minor surface rust in the gas tank. I really like my Porter Cable tools. Bon appe'titCM.

One innovative way I have head is to fasten the tank to a tractor wheel. put some gravel in it and drive around awhile, sounds like something a farmer would do LOL

Heard of doing the same but with a length
of small chain with one end tied outside to
be able to retrieve it.

Getting the gravel out would be a chore. I use a 3' length of 5/16 chain with a plastic twine
string tied to the end. I pull the end of the twine through the cap, and turn the cap on. I strap
the tank to the backhoe rear wheel with a couple ratchet straps, lift the hoe up on it's stands and
let the wheel turn for several hours while I am working near by. The inside will look like chrome.

I can see why you mainly need to hit the bottom of the tank--that's where the water settles. I wouldn't trust that to be non-sparking though, I often draw sparks while wire-brushing steel. Keep the speed down? A brass brush wouldn't be abrasive enough to get all the rust.

Looking good Chuck! I need to get around and clean the carb on my 300. It has done a lot of work since its rebuild and I think it is probably time to get a check up.
