Hard steering 51 VAC

I got a 51 VAC that is near impossible to steer. I greased every Zerk I could find, but that didn't really help. There is a collar below the gas tank that surrounds the steering post on the other side of the dash panel that surrounds the post. I sprayed and turned over and over till I got it to where I could turn it but still plenty stiff. Any ideas?

The tube that the steering shaft goes through into the dash is full of old grease and rust. Case only put a grease fitting towards the lower end of tube (inside the dash) on the later models and that fitting would really only fill the bottom portion of the tube with grease before oozing out the bottom. I had the exact same issue. I ended up pulling the steering shaft all the way out and cleaning both the shaft and inside the tube out. I also added a new bushing while I was at it. once everything was cleaned up I added a grease fitting on the top end of the tube (drilled a hole in the tube, welded a small nut on it, then screwed the fitting in). After that it steers easy and has ample grease in the tube. Was well worth it!

just to be clear. They changed the steering in mid 51. Some have the steering wheel shaft going into a gear box. The other, the steering wheel is a bit cockeyed and the shaft runs along side of the tractor with no steering arm protruding in the front of the tractor. All the gears for this model are on top of the steering pedestal. If you have that one, there is a zirk that you can grease up there. If the person owned the tractor didn't have a manual, it probably didn't get greased. Those are tractors serial 5570000 and later.

I?ll second conners reply, we had the very same issue with our VAC 14. The tube the steering shaft ran through was rusted and gumed up with old grease and dirt fro the last 60-70 years. And was not allowing the shaft to turn freely with in the tube.

Here are a couple pictures of the grease fitting on the steering tube. I thought I had a picture that was closer but I cant find it.

If you decide you have the new style steering, a word of caution. If you find it has no grease in the box above the pedestal grease away, but if you get the urge to take it apart, the end bearing in there seems to be no longer availible and the only cross reference bearing is a 37 Chevy, or so Ive been told.

There are two u-joints along the side of the tractor. They are reasonably easy to disconnect. Taking one of those off should tell you if it is a tight stearing shaft, or tight gears up front. I suppose those knuckles could also bind. Mine have no zirks on them, though it looks like there was a place for them.
