Good morning all, I am a newbie here looking for some information. I am in the process of possibly buying a 1976 1070 with powershift this friday and I have no clue as to how to properly operate the PS. Could one of you Case gurus school me on the proper usage of this shifter. I have found some of the don't about them but still don't fully understand using it. I am curious on things like do you have to use the clutch to go from forward to reverse (I will always air on the caution side and use the clutch unless told otherwise) Do you have to clutch to change ranges etc.

Thanks for any help

John

I helped a friend bale hay this summer using his 970 with power shift, anyway that?s what I think he called it. There were 4 gears, or ranges,to
shift into, which you had to depress clutch pedal to do but whatever gear you were in there was another lever that shifted through 3 speeds
within whatever gear you were in, this lever you didn?t have to depress the clutch pedal.
To get into reverse you had to depress the clutch. There was a reverse in each range I believe.

John, the Case powershift is a rather easy transmission once you get the hang of it, there are 4 ranges with 3 forward powershifts in each
gear for a total of 12 gears, Reverse works in ranges 1,2,3 only in 4th range reverse is locked out. When starting out in forward motion in
any of the ranges it starts out in the 1st powershift, by simply pushing the lever forward you get the 2nd, then the 3rd. To downshift simply
do the opposite. If you push in the clutch while in the 3rd powershift the transmission and the lever will automatically return to the 1st
powershift. It is best NOT to do this as it causes extra wear and tear on the transmission. It is best to down shift manually until in 1st
powershift then depress the clutch pedal. clutch pedal is required from forward to reverse. Any other questions ask someone will be glad to
help you out.

Jeremy's directions are spot-on. I will just add do not leave tractor running in reverse while it is stationary and the first 70 series did not have 4th reverse locked out. Even if your tractor is capable of reverse in 4th range don't use it.

If you buy it I would suggest in the strongest possible terms that you get a factory operators manual for it. I've always found info no one else ever mentioned in those manuals!

I like to shift the powershift up and down around 1,500rpm for road traveling. If you are lugging it down with a heavy load I only let the rpm drop to around 1,850 rpm then shift. And I use only hytran oil for hydralics and transmission.

Thanks for all the help. I did end up buying it. The powershift seems to work quite smoothly up and down but it does have a few things that need help. The shift levers are quite loose so it takes a bit of mucking about to get it in the range you want that is something I can fix pretty easy I hope and the foot throttle (not sure if that is the correct terminology or not) and clutch pedals are sticky when fully depressed. Also the LH brake does not seem to be actuating. The temp gauge doesn't work but all the other vital signs on the gauges are right where they should be. It also has new rear tires. I will definitely be getting an original owners manual, what is the best choice for service manuals?
Now comes the wait as the tractor is almost 400Km from me so I am having a hauling company deliver it next week.
Thanks again for the info and advice, I am sure I will have lots of questions for along time to come. Hopefully I don't turn into a PITA.
