Mom' old Pontiac sat in an old building for about 10 years at the family farm in eastern Kansas. We settled the estate and I ended up with the car. Got it running good enough to drive it 450 miles to central Illinois. It smelled of mice. I never though about rats. Around sundown with about a 100 miles to go, I stopped and got a candy bar and threw the wrapper onto the floor on the passenger side. Tooling along at 60+ mph, soon a BIG rat come out from under the front passenger seat to check out the candy bar wrapper. The rat and I scared each other and the rat ran back under the seat. I pulled over and opened all four doors and banged on things---hoping the rat might exit. The rat stayed in the car as far as I could tell. IT IS GETTING DARK!!! I though about what the rat might do. Worst case scenario, I visualize it running up my pant leg and causing me to wreck the car. Dad always kept baling wire or twine hanging on implements and in our old cars. Dad could fix anything with baling wire. LOL Sure enough, mom's old car had some twine in the trunk. I tied my baggy pant legs shut at the bottom with twine. The rat and I did not bother each other in the dark for the next two hours and I made it home. sigh!!!! The next few days, I left the doors open. Bought a rat trap and set it in the car and caught a rat. Out of curiosity, I kept setting the trap AND CAUGHT A SECOND RAT. Have no idea how many might have left the car.
