I first found out about this tractor around 2008. I was able to buy this tractor this past weekend.

From what I have been told from the owners family I believe this tractor was one of the first three Experimental 350's built. It has many experimental castings.

I believe that these 3 tractors were the first 350's built. It is also likely that these 3 tractors had some differences as it was typical of Case to try different things on the pre-production experimentals.

The bumps in the sheet metal are from engineering testing different manufacturers power steering units. Most likely this 350 was the first Rock Island row crop to have power steering. They used it to try power steering units from Eaton?,Behlen and Char Lyn.It has the newer style steering wheel normally found on the B models and also has the steering wheel center cap marked Power Steering.

It was on the test track at the Case experimental farm at Bettendorf,IA when the seller's grampa picked it out around January 1959 after they were finished with testing.

I'm a little jealous and annoyed. The previous owner was my uncle who passed away last year. I didn't know the family was selling it. Good buy though. Tractor ran great the last time I was on it. Have fun with it.

Really nice. It looks like it was well taken care of in the past and that it will be well taken care of in the future. Enjoy it

Got a steering wheel like that on my hi-profile 730. Combine steering wheels are the same as the big 400.

John,

You brought up an interesting point. Thats probably why I have never seen that style steering wheel on a round nose.I will see if I can determine if the wheel is keyed or splined.

They did not buy the tractor until January 29 of 1959 when Case was finished testing it. I was told that his dad always refered to it as a 1957 model. I believe since engineering finished testing the tractor in late 1958 that it was likely that this steering wheel was installed during testing and the results of this testing was that Case offered power steering on the B model General purpose Rock Island tractors. Also this tractor has the belt driven ps pump as shown for the utility model 350 and not the gear driven shown for the B model general purpose tractors.
I can not find any evidence that Case ever offered power steering on the General Purpose 350 tractors. My SM shows power steering on a 350 Utility.
Thanks for your input as I am trying to figure this tractor out and it's place in the development of the Case line of tractors.
I welcome your and any other forum members knowledge on any of my posts. Thanks Nick

Nick: Really nice find. I would make a high wager that the 40 spline steering wheel that is on there was not original. CASE didn't introduce the 40 spline wheel until late '59. Prior to late '59 they used a keyed taper shaft. Check it out.
