My starter stopped working and upon removal found that the drive gear has broken in half and half has dropped down into the flywheel housing. Do I need to remove this broken piece (which is a massive job) or will it be safe to leave it down in there?

Double down on the magnet trick....

Use a plastic hose that you can fit in the hole, and keep the magnet inside the hose, then you may draw out the pieces you wish.

Pull the front drain plug, and stick the biggest magnet you can get to go in the hole to it and screw the plug back in. That will catch the broken piece of gear and keep it from causing havoc, even if it won't come out the hole.

You can imagine my joy when I looked behind the battery box and saw 2 broken pieces of my gear that were missing. They evidently fell out of the starter nose when I removed it. There is still a very small piece missing, about the size of one tooth from the gear. I'm going to try to flush it out with a kerosene rinse but if that doesn't get it I'll probably leave it.

is your 1070 p-shift ?, if so ,,btdt, and I was lucky ! in January when I broke mine on my 1971 -1070,, 1 tooth was missing from the parts I found ,, it had to had gone down in the 1st reservoir , others advised me that pc will gravitate to the magnetic plug, and I concur ,,also you need to recognize that case intentionally built the power shift with sumps under each component to hopefully contain any parts that got flung out of the works ,,. I think my 1070 has 5 drain plugs ,, the 1st one from the bell housing holds only a few qts ,. as you go back under the brutes belly each plug seems to have twice more fluid than previous one ..

I agree with nutty, pull the access plate and do a little fishing(lot easier than splitting)

I would try fishing it out with a magnet first, I have split them and found half in them before, and if you can't get it through the starter hole pull the torque tube seal plate, it is a pain to clean up and reseal but far easier than splitting

1070s have a solid oil pan that mounts to the torque tube. If you cannot get the pieces out through the starter hole you can either split the tractor or remove the oil pan, but I believe the flywheel is going to be in the way, best to split it.

That means splitting the tractor to get it out I believe.

I would remove it just to be safe from "ventilating" the bell housing(especially if it is a pwr shift).
