I got a few hrs. away from the sugar bush the other day to install the fuel cells and intake and exaust manifolds on the 931. honed the cells on the lapping block, and installed them. Went to install the manifolds and imediatly noticed that the one-peice gaskets wern't going to work. The intake hole was way too small for the port and the intake manifold uses farrows which lacked a lot from fitting into the hole in the gaskets. The VICTOR-REINZ gasket kit did also have the individual gasket rings (3 intakes, and 6 exaust) for farrows, but the exaust manifold was not machined for farrows. There was no way that I was going to eliminate the intake manifold farrows and use the pictured gasket on the tractor. It took a while, but I got all the individual exaust gaskets centered without farrows and the manifold clamped tight to secure them.
I first talked to john Saeli, and then Bro, and he went thtough the prodeidure to install the manifolds. It mentioned both styles but not clearly. I then talked to Rod, as he had a 930 apart at the moment. His one peice gaskets had a center intake whole large enough to acccept the farrows.
I guess VICTOR-REINZ screw up these gaskets.

Loren,

Interesting to see that there is a difference between the diesel and gas manifold gaskets. One more thing to look out for when I get to that point on my 930.

I have a propane 930 and it has a small intake manifold compared to the diesel models. Exhaust manifolds are the same.....propane is 377 cu.in. same as gasoline model.

That gasket looks to me like a gas engine gasket.

Loren, What exactly does the lapping do? Would a flat board and a sheet of fine emory cloth work. Looks like it just smooths up the surface. Bill

If you are going to lap anything use a thick pane of glass. A board isn't flat or hard enough.

If the fuel cells are not lapped and mated the halves will start leaking compression between the surfaces, and eventually the compression leak will cut a hole through the head into the water jacket and ruin the head. You "might" get away with some 600 grit wet sanding paper, but emery cloth is way too course.

The engines usually are missing some ferrules in the exhaust. I shear 16ga. sheet metal and roll them around a proper size socket to make new ones.

The exaust manifold was not machined to accept ferrules. Just the heads and intake manifold were. That was the dilema, along with the intake hole being way too small in the one peice gasket. This is a 1969 931, not an early one, which had ferrules in the exaust manifold. That gasket would have cut air intake into the heads by half if used as built. That would have had someone scratching their head when the tractor smoked heavy and had no power.
