I bought another Case, a 1949 Sc. Paints good, needs a good cleaning.. tires are good, kept in barn... Owner used it in parades He said the mag quit. He bought a rebuilt one no spark . I checked, it has power to magneto also to points.. none to spark plugs.. im converting it to a distributor...

Real nice find I would replace the mag as well caps can run into 100s of dollars just a scam. I got 2 Fairbanks magnetos I used one for parts but I gave up on them parts are to expensive. My tractor runs fine with the distributor. You can find a complete distributor and all new parts cheaper than just a single cap on a magneto. 10 dollars for a Delco cap no comparison. Really most folks don't use the crank to start it anyway. But it can be a personal preference for some I respect that.

Magnetos don't need power. The wire is a ground wire to cut off the spark. As a first step, remove the ground wire from the mag and check for spark again. You could have a bare wire or faulty cutoff switch. If that doesn't work, then clean the points and try again (look up the Fairbanks Morse manual online). If that doesn't work, you might start looking for a mag rebuild shop or a different mag/distributor. If you are handy with electrical devices and the distributor portion of the mag is good, then you can use the mag as a distributor with an external coil.
 
Christopher Thanks for the info, The coil was the problem never thought about wiring in an external coil great idea. I had originally bought the donor mag 20 dollars for the coil . After about 3 years it went. The coil for that mag is 80 dollars new. But it also has a 2 part cap over 150 dollars for both. I just cant justify or convince myself that is a fair price. If you look at a delco distributer cost for maintenance this was a no brainer.
