DC - Update

I pulled the top cover off over the top of the PTO and found the chain links to be in like new shape. Turned the shaft...quiet and smooth. My guess is the broken link I found at the bottom of the case probably broke a while ago and was repaired.

I pulled off the reservoir for the oil bath air cleaner and it was dry as a bone. Do these tractors suck the oil out of the air cleaner?

Thsnks for all your help with this project!!

They don't suck the oil out. Usually what happens is they get a hole rusted in the bottom and it leaks out.

Ag,

We used a 39 on the farm with an overbore kit and did not exactly keep it a stock rpm, it would indeed suck the oil out of the air cleaner. You may alleviate the problem by going to a lighter oil.

Anything is possible I guess but I have never seen one of those heavy cast Iron oil reservoir bottoms rust thru like the SC's tin ones did.
