I recently acquired a mid 60’s JI Case 430 gas tractor to plow my driveway with. The first time I went to use it I noticed that the diff lock was not engaging so I looked and found that the foot rest was bent up a little and not letting the heel lever go down all the way. I bent the foot rest out of the way and tried it, it worked but now it wont disengage. The lever springs back up like it should but I when it starts to spin both tires are spinning. I am afraid that I might break an axle if I leave it locked in. Any Idea where to start to look?

Since it has been inoperative for a while, I would think it needs some freeing up. The shaft that the pedel is on needs to rotate, but may be stuck. Try some PB blaster, or what ever and work the shaft with a pair of visegrips. During normal operation, sometimes it is necessary to zig-zag the steering wheel to release the locking collar on the axle stubs. Loren
