I have my 400 under a loader. The left wheel has started locking up when I apply the brake. I sounds like something internal. Any ideas? Doesn't sound good.

Sounds like broken springs in the brakes. If it was a bearing I think it would hang up without hitting the brakes. caseman-d

The 400 brake housings have no drain hole. If your tractor sits out in the weather, moisture that gets into the brake housing can't get out, mixes with all the dust from the pads, and rusts everything in sight. Which of course causes things to stop moving. Suspect you'll need to take the left brake apart and clean things up and replace parts as needed. Pretty easy to work on. I would do the other side at the same time.....

I would say if the wheel locks up when you apply the brake, there"s a problem with the brake. If the balls in the brake actuator are rusted up, the brakes will lock up as you say. It"s an easy fix- remove the brake cover, slide off the outer disk, and remove the actuator assembly. Pop off the 3 springs from the center of the actuator, and clean up everything real good. I like to lube the balls and ramps with anti-sieze, but others like grease. If the disks look real worn, they will need to be replaced. Lube up all the other moving parts and reassemble. Adjust the brake, and it shouldn"t lock up anymore. I had this happen with my 900, and almost rolled it over when backing off the trailer. I serviced the brakes on all my tractors after that. I hope that"s your problem, since all it should cost is a little time.

Thanks for the information guys. I went through the brakes not long ago so I'm afraid it's deeper than that unless I got something put together wrong. In any case, I'll be digging into that area again.

Pure guess: a bearing going!
