I have a '49 LA and am thinking about beefing up the engine. I was wondering if anyone has done or heard of anything being done as far as bore and stroke or porting the head. Any help would be appreciated.

I built my 1948 LA up with 4 7/8 sleeve set and an LP head. No other changes and puts out about 90 horsepower.

Hello Gene, The L I'm familiar with wasn't known as a real fuel efficient beast. With all your changes (and I assume, compression increase) did your LA get better fuel efficiency? How much compression do you have on it now?

I've seen one of the LA's with a Cummins and there seems to have been a kit for installing a Detroit Diesel (there are a lot of them).

Cheers

You could install a Detroit Diesel.

I have seen Perkins and Ford diesels in them as well.

The whole experience can be marred if one moves too fast and makes too many assumptions that they can just use "as is" some parts they should be closely scrutinizing and possibly attended to.
