I just gotta get this forum going tonight. My first adventure solo was on a 37 L with a 16' springtooth harrow in 1955, at age 8.

After years of riding (sleeping) on the floorboards Dad let me sit on his lap and steer the 7120 magnum. At the age of about 5 or 6 I was promoted from the lawn mower and four wheeler to the 500b, only drove it from the hay elevator to the shed but it sure made my day! I was 8 when I got to chisel plow with the 7120 and a 7 shank Heston, dad made the first round so I didn't catch any stumps or branches, supervised for another round then turned me loose untill it was time for chores.

I was 16 and a half and it was 1944 Sc it was also my fist tractor I owned but i drove others before. I bought it and fixed it up plowed my garden with a two bottom john deere trip plow. Now it's sold to a guy 2 hrs away when I traded it for a 1955 400 supper diesel last week Yeah I guess when other teens are buying video game I'm buying tractors it may cost a little more but I'd take it any day ! By the way I'm 18 now!

4-5 years old, dad would block wood along fence lines and put the 1950 DC-4 in 1st gear with me steering, at end of field I would turn around and let him catch up. By 11 years old I was running 700 standard diesel hauling manure, 930 row crop pulling chopper boxes, and all the SC and DC"s moving feed wagons. Of course runnin the 990DB with loader or the 1845? Skid steer was the best treat. I view myself as on the younger side at 35 and wonder why no-one would consider putting a kid under 16 on a tractor anymore....very few of us would have any stories.

A 1949 DC pullin a ole 77 New Holland baler with a Wisconsin motor. Bout 8 years old, didn't do the best at first, but Dad was very patient, as he was stacking on the flat rack. What a baler, to leave a memory. I that it blew a head around 1972, when it would not start after dinner, using either and a huge electic drill , with a homemade thing to fit the crankshaft receiver. Got a New Holland 68 pto driven after that. Just hauled the ole 77 to scrap last year, had a big tree growin in it. The money helped with the tile fund. Hated to see it go. Don L.

Hello to all CASE people

The first CASE tractor that I drove was a 1931 model "L"on steel wheels, ploughing (plowing) with a 4 furrow ( bottom ) plough. At that time I was only 5 years old, in a large paddock (Field) containing 90 acres. 30 chains x 30 chains square. I still remeber that day very vividly, have been a true CASE nutter ever since. I am now 77 years old. I was to found the Case & Vintage Farm Machinery Club of (N.Z ) Inc away back in March 1968. which is still going strong today. Since then I have owned several Case tractors as a collector. GREAT TRACTORS !!!

Regards to all "Old Abe" fans where ever you are.

I was about 8. It was our 2590 running the chisel plow in summer fallow dad would make the first round so i wouldnt hit any neighboring crops then set me loose. we still have that tractor and i used it the last two years to pull my 1850/787 airseeder. Still a good machine for being 30 some years old. good hydraulics and lots of low end power....I think im gonna go start it up and find something to do.

In November 1966 I was discharged from the Air Force (Jet Aircraft Mechanic); in Jan 1967 I was hired by the local Ford Tractor dealer (Brockman Ford Tractor, Greensboro NC) as a tractor mechanic. During my time there I worked on/drove almost every make of tractor made, Case included. What year, model, etc. I don't remember.

About 6 or 7 on a '53 SC. My left leg had to be long enough to push the foot clutch pedal while sitting on the edge of the seat.

Actually started driving at 5 or 6 on a '23 1 ton Model T truck. Went til I couldn't hold the go pedal down any more, rest foot and go again. I wasn't allowed to use the direct drive (high) lever.

A Case D standard while baling hay. Nobody will believe this but I was 4 years old (almost 5) and my sister was gone so my Dad put me on the D for baling. It sounds crazy now, but that was when my love for Case started. After I turned 10 I did all the plowing every year and loved every minute of it. We still have Dad's D, all restored and ready to go. It was the 1st new tractor he bought. Don

My first Case tractor I drove is my 1936 cc raking hay with a case side delivery rake when I was 6yrs old. My dad took and drilled two holes in the clutch lever and saw off a fork handle and extended the clutch lever up to the fender brace so I could engage or disengage the tractor

I don't remember the exact age, but probably 6-7 with grandpa on his IH 300. Then dad's 430, and eventually plowing with a 930 and a JR 5x16s by about 10.

Great memories of getting to "drive" grandpa's tractor, and a few years later getting home from school and plowing until bedtime. It was amazing to me to shut the lights off when plowing with the 930 after dark and watch fire coming out of the exhaust, and the manifold glowing red..... Great memories.

The first tractor was a Farmall H when I was 8 bringing in racks of wheat straw to put in the barn. First Case would've been the 970 about that 8-10 range. When I was 10 I ran the 2390 working ground by myself while dad planted with the 970. My grandpa bought the H new in 1950 and my Dad bought the 970 in 1974, it was two years old and then he bought the 2390 new in Feb 1980 for $33k. We still have the H & 2390.

Don't remember my first solo trip. The first time behind the wheel was with my uncle in the 1070. I don't know how old I was, but I was old enough to be driving the smaller tractors by myself. At the time the 1070 was our "big" tractor, so I though driving it was the greatest thing. We were driving across a farm he rented after harvest and he taught me to drive down the rows of picked corn with out running over stalks. I had a heck of a time with that since I kept looking down at the front tire instead of straight ahead. That farm had a rickety old bridge across a ditch that was kinda narrow. Made me nervous as heck to cross it, but told me to keep driving and not worry about it. Learned a lot that day.

About 7 with my Uncle Charlie and not by myself LA on iron plowing. I was well experienced on a 9N and D4 but was never allowed to run the two LA Cases we farmed with. I own one of the tractors now plus two others. Someday I plan on getting one to run again. Dad bought a 930 in 67 while I was in the Army, it was in the fall of 68 drilling wheat before I was able to run it.

Great Idea;
My first Case was a 311b picking up tobacco.I dont know how old I was,but I was not big enough to push the foot clutch in.I would use the hand clutch and dad had the hoses for the loader run behind the hand clutch making harder to operate.
I ran our 8n ford when I was young enough that all I could do is steer it,dad showed me how to turn the key off if I got into trouble.

It was a 1948 VAC and I was 15 years old. In 1971, I went with my my dad from WV to Columbus, Ohio to pick it up. I remember being a little disappointed when I first saw it. I had no idea what a VAC looked like prior to seeing it. On our way back home, I remember saying to my dad as we passed by a Case Dealer in Columbus, "I wish our Case Tractor looked like that one", as I pointed to a Black Knight tractor parked in front of the dealership. Dad just sort of laughed and said, "me too".

Loren, well that is a good one, hmm,,first Case,on the farm,we always had the hand me downs from the dealership, but there was always a new Case in the field too.My thoughts are it was a used 64 "930" diesal, but the very first tractor was a old Ford Major that had been traded in,and I pulled a stone boat, the Major had a horn on it,and I would honk the horn everytime my older brother got in front of me,that was to funny to me.

The first CASE tractor I ever drove was a VAC my granddad bought new. I was over at my uncles when I was probably about 12 & hauled in hay racks from the field unloaded them in the barn. Then went out & dropped off the empty rack where my uncle would be needing it & the go & take another full rack in & do it all over again. Gerald

It was about 1993 or 1994 and I would have been 10 or 11 and dad stuck me on the SC (named "Smokey Joe" why I dont know) with a custom made 9 wheel side delivery rake. Said dont run the rake into anything like the rock piles or an REA pole. I lasted about a week and miss judged one REA pole and bent the front wheel of the rake. The custom rake had the front wheel literally straight to my right, not behind me at all and I didnt want to miss any hay because that resulted in a butt chewing and didnt want to hit the pole because that was a butt chewing. I guess I picked the latter. Loved raking with that thing, open air, choice to fold up the seat and stand, and just the hum of ol' Smokey Joe.

Drove a neighbor's VAC at the age of 17 or so, they were picking up hay from our fields that I had baled and the person they sent to drive did not want to try to drive across the culvert by the road with the hay wagon behind. Zach

In 1969 I was just past 8 years old when my Dad let me drive his 211b. A buddy of mine still has that machine and won't turn loose of it. I also got to try my hand on his nearly-new 350 Case dozer that summer.

First case tractor I drove was or old 800 making maple syrup in the spring of 1989 or 1990, that would have made me 4 or 5 years old. That was our biggest tractor at that time.

"Slabing" plowed ground with our "DC" Case, about age 10. Still remember how that steering wheel spinner hurt when those front wheels dropped into that plow furrow, and the steering kicked back, thats been a long time ago-

My first time on a tractor just happened to be a Case 830 with Case-O-Matic. Came to Iowa to visit the wife's folks and ended up discing plowed ground. Never been on a tractor before. I was 19 years old and never left the farm after that. Had many more Case tractors and combines after that. Raised a family and had a great life.Brian

A 1030 at 26 year's old, yes that's right. Dad was an IH man and that was the first Case tractor I bought for myself. It was used with 750 hrs. Super nice tractor.

5 or 6 baling with a 770, wasn't strong enough to push in the clutch, but my uncle would get her moving and point me in the right direction, then He would hop on the wagon. All I had to do was keep the tire beside the windrow.

SC, and I don't know how old I was. I know I wasn't big enough to pull the clutch back, so I drove it with my foot up against the clutch lever.
I know I mowed raked and loose stacked all of the alfalfa, when I was in the second grade. Probably worked harder when I was under 15 then I do now.

I was 12 and it was a 1929 L. Dad had put a faster steering gear on it when he put it on rubber . It would cramp on the turns and it took a man to straighten it. On the first turn it cramped and I just went round and around. Oh yea I was pulling a 12" JD rod weeder. Dad had to run up a 1/2 mi to get on and straignten it out. I had to wait a year until I was 13 when he bought a new 1948 LA. I than worked all day long.

Jimmie, I turned too short with the L and the rear tire hooked the outside cable of the evener draw bar up over It and bent the fender. OOPS. The clutch lever was backwards on the L so when I pulled back on the lever, it lurched and I could snap it over center. It was pretty easy to disingage. All I had to do was put both hands on the steering wheel and put my foot against the lever and give it a kick.

First case was an 830 diesel, com, eagle hitch. Drove it pulling the rock wagon while the older brothers and sisters and dad picked. Don't know how old I was, but I couldn't reach the clutch and shift at the same time so dad or one of my brothers would do it. First tractor I drove alone was a ford jubilee pulling wagons and following my dad around the field while he combined with the 830 and 77 combine. I also raked hay that year. The same year I started driving the 830 pulling the 200 baler while dad stacked on the wagon. I was 7 or 8 that year, so that would have been 68 or 69.

It was a 1934 Model L on steel in 1947, I was 10 years old and got 50 cents per hour, I have the tractor in my collection, the farmer had four of the L tractors and hired the young boys to drive them. All of the returning WW2 soldiers got higher paying jobs in town.

Today's Featured Article - On the Road with Dave Gohl: Tractors and Farming - by Dave Gohl. I never thought I'd live to see the day, when I could call myself a farmer. What allows me to say this? Well, when our family moved to our 20 acre site near New Prague, Minnesota, I had one thought in mind. You guessed it, farm it somehow. A little history is in order. In my younger days, mom, dad and my brother made frequent visits to dad's youngest brother Pete, who took over the home farm from grandpa MIke. It was the typical set-up, milk cows, pigs & chickens. In the winter, we'd play ... [Read Article]
