We have no idea what we did but it finally started running. We spent 4 days just getting it running because I was careful not to overheat the starter. It still cranks hard but the temperatures here are now in the low 40's. I doubt if it would start if it was below freezing. Case Nutty gave me a tip to by-pass the coil resister from the starter selinoid to boost the power at start-up which sounds reasonable and will be doing. It's starting to look like I may have to build a heated garage for it.
