DB or Case 1390 diesel tractor started to puke radiator fluid out of over flow so bought a radiator cap. It then stated to overhead so replaced the Thermostat. It was still overheating so I figured it was the water pump. I replaced the water pump and also flushed the radiator at the same time. She is now still overheating. No water in the oil and no oil in the rad fluid. Thought it might be air in the system sothe tractor get hot and cracked the large plug on the side of the thermostat housing while I keep the radiator full. She is till over heating (around 225 on the temp gauge. Anyone have any idea? This this has gotten me pulling my hair out!!!!!

Sounds like a head gasket to me. If you changed all that and the radiator cores are not blocked then its a combustion leak. They dont crack heads so im saying headgasket. Thad

How do you test a head gasket on a diesel? I know with a gas I can do it with a pressure gauge and removing spark plugs. You would think that if it was head gasket then I would have water in oil or oil in water? Thanks

The easiest way would be take the water neck off at the thermostate and remove thermostate. Fill the block back up with water to that point. Unhook the fan belt so the water pump wont turn. Pull the kill out so it wont start. Then watch the water in the head as someone cranks the engine over. If you see consistant bubbles coming up to that point its a combustion leak. I have put many head gaskets on them and very seldom does oil and water ever transfer into each other. keep us posted on what you find. Thad

Thad's recommendation is for finding a head gasket issue. Another idea is you can mate a junk injector to an air fitting for testing just like you would for a gas engine.
To check radiator flow, just pull the hoses off the radiator, fill the top one with a hose, if you get a couple gallons per minute out the bottom, it is fine.

Couple thoughts...
Does the radiator actually have flow through it(might need professionally cleaned)? Is the bottom radiator hose collapsing by chance(aftermarket hoses don't have the spring inside like the OEM ones did, the hose sucking down is a sign water isn't getting through the radiator)?

Radiator hose not collapsing (check that already), engine gets 200+ before the RAD fluid starts to get warm. Almost like I don't have flow. How do I test radiator flow?

I would pressurize the cooling system before taking anything apart.

Not sure I know what you mean my pressurize the cooling system? How do I do that? or test that? Jonathan
