I have been woking on the DC and trying to get a couple head bolts out........can anyone guess what happened? Yep i broke them. And that after one was loose but would bind after half a turn. UGHHHHHH!!!! not sure what to do now.

Thank you guys. I got them both. Was a challange as i thought i was going to mess up the block but i didn't. ended up not getting close enough with torch and ended up drilling them both out and running the tap down them. but both are done. I wish I had a scrap block to practice on to get this technique down as i was so afraid of damaging the block. thanks again.

I was afraid of damaging the threads. I drilled down one but got off center somehow. So just torch them and should not hurt cast block huh? What would u recommend for gas pressures? 5 and 25? How close can I get to threads?

you should be able to get right up to the threads with no problem, you don't really have to worry about the cast block as cast Iron is nearly impossible to damage with a torch. just blow it out as close as you feel comfortable getting and the rest should come out easily when you chase the threads with a tap after everything has completely cooled.As for pressures just go with whatever you usually use for cutting and you'll be fine. good luck

Take a bur bit in an electric drill and go right down the center of the remaining stud. Then take a cutting tourch and melt the rest of the stud from the treads if you do it carefully you will not melt the cast. Then take a tap and clean out the threads. I had this trouble on an M farmall block and thats how we fixed our problem and it worked the best out of all the other tricks.

Hi Flewster, about 12 years ago a friend of mine brought an 8n ford into school shop class to overhaul it, in the process he sucessfully broke off ALL the studs for the head. Our welding instructor suggested that we simply blow them out with the torch since they all went directly into the water jacket. Since the cast iron wont cut with the torch we blew out the studs with the torch and cleaned up the threads with a tap. Still runs great today.

if you have some stud above the deck. weld a nut to it.

if it's below the deck, use a dremel or center punch to center a hole, then drill and chase them. use lefty bits if you have them.

whoever told you to avoid heat forgets it's an ENGINE BLOCK and has fire inside the cyls.. that makes heat.

Probably gonna have to drill them out. Really dont want to put heat from welder or torch on the block. Possibly warp it!!

Find something to cover the surface of the block like a piece sheet metal, a couple layers of wet rags, etc. Place a nut over the broken stud and weld it to the stud. Wait a little while until it cools and try to turn the stud out. If the nut twists off then try it again. I have used alot of old nuts trying to get some broken bolts out but they always come out eventually. Each time you weld a nut on you are improving your chances of getting it out because the stud will shrink a little when it cools.
