Dual batteries

Well i did do a search, but that just confused me ... :roll: I want to add another 12v bat to my case 830 diesel ( W/out any glowplugs). Is it best to connect the second directly to the starter and its own ground? or to connect them together(not sure about parellel or in series)

I converted my 830 lo profile diesel to 2- 12v 1000 amp Dekas with the bolt type terminals instead of lead posts, best thing I ever did, we made cables with eyes for all the terminals and cabled it with heavy truck type cable. I have a Delco alternator with a special lo rpm kick in regulator and it's charging as soon as its running. It will start at any reasonable temp with just the manifold heater and our Pa. winters can be cold.
I never thought the battery boxes on those tractors were bad with the slide out latches, kinda brings the batts out where you can easily get to them. I won't argue about the 8D as it seems you can never have enough battery although I have never ran the 2 -1000's low.

2 -6's get hooked up in series for 12v, 2 -12v's get hooked up in parallel for 12v, 12-12's spin faster but not as much reserve as 2 6v's, considering everything I prefer 2-12v's

About a dozen years ago I got rid of the dual battery set up and built a box for one of those great big (8D??) batteries with both posts on one end, mounted it half under the platform on the right side, just an angle iron frame with a hold down. Ended fighting those heavy batteries under the fuel tank and cleaning posts and connections. Those big batteries last forever. Best modification I ever did on the old 830.

2 12V's hooked parellel is a much better set up than 2 6V's. In a parellel set up, the NEG post of each battery goes to Ground, & the POS of each battery goes to the starter. It will use less cable to come from the POS term. of the back battery to the POS of the next battery, then to the starter w/ one cable. Then, a cable from the NEG. term. of the back battery, to the NEG term. of the next battery, then to ground with one cable. Good luck.

We switched our 930 to 2 12 volt bateries by getting custom made cables that connected both positive posts to the starter and both negative posts to the ground. It really helped starting. Don
