Oliver Duper 77 Diesel Cracked sleeves.

I had 4 sleeves on a fresh overhaul crack. The top 1/4" of the sleeve came right off. The tractor ran great as it warmed up to 180 degrees. I retorqued the head to 114 and before I knew it, I had coolant boiling out of the radiator. After checking the thermostat, coolant flow etc. I took off the head and found the cracks. Block is straight and counterbores measure 2.050-2.0515 deep. The head gasket seems to seal near the ID of the sleeve and not on the part of the sleeve supported by the block counterbors. Anybody had this happen to them?
 
what's wrong with that? Olivers earned their keep on our farm and a 77 is way more tractor than a dc in almost every category

All insults aside, I bet from what you said that the head gasket is wrong for the tractor. the gasket not sitting out over the counterbore is a recipe for broken sleeves. The way you describe would push the sleeves down and fracture the area at the block counterbore. Double check to see if there are different gaskets for that engine, maybe between the 77 and Super 77. Just my thoughts. mEl
 
we have and have had both for 50 years, a 77 has a nice 6 speed trans., good brakes, nice steering and would pull 3-14 in clay loam, a nice live pto and was handy for everything, planting ,dragging, haying, feeder wagon, hauling silage ect. the dc is cheaper on gas and has better hydraulics but is inferior in the handling, gear selection and general usuability areas, both have a good trans/rear end and generally reliable engines, thanks for listening, you can now put your head back into the sand.
 
Do you have a overbore kit with a standard bore gasket just as Mel asked.Go to the oliver forum and ask for J.Schwiebert,he has lots of knowledge on these old girls.Lol Scott
