case sc shift problem

am posting this for a friend. he has a case sc which runs great but he cannot get the tranny to go into any gear but second and reverse.
any ideas?? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Pull shifter bolts and shifter , study shifter plates , use a pry bar and find more gears,, more than likely there has been too much shifting in last 60 yrs and the parts are worn creating slop ,, might be able to build up with welds and file to better fit ,,

if some one has had the cover of and put a longer bolt in where the shifter rail slides will cause this
