159 Gas Engine running too rich?

Professionally rebuilt the 159 gasser in my 69 580. The old carb was gone so I ordered a new Zenith replacement and installed with great results for the first 10 hours of run time. Then the engine began to sputter and miss a bit and seems to be running rich.

A check of the plugs and excess black puffs during power indicate excess fuel. The carb was removed and cleaned and the float level confirmed. The carb was my first thought but now I am looking for thoughts from you. I am going to have the old distributor rebuilt as some real wear is evident on the lobes? Valves adjustment so soon? The carb has a single adjustment screw and really doesn't affect the sputtering. Ideas?

dont forget to check the coil, i just had a 222 tractor that ran fine sometimes and gave me a fit about like y ou mentioned loss of power and smoked black like too rich wouldnt start half the time, put on a good coil and now every thing is fine just my humble opion dctom

If the distributor bushing is badly worn like mine was, the points would not operate correctly and it would not fire the coil consistently, and thus the fuel isn't getting burned. Do the points look bad?

Generally though, the last thing you did to it is most often what is the problem, so I suspect the carb, some dirt can get into the float valve and leave it open and thus dump excess fuel.
But if you cleaned it up, maybe ignition.
As mentioned a bad coil might be issue, is it hot?

Thanks guys. I remember a long time ago hearing the old advice about checking ignition if it seems like fuel... The points looked really bad and I now suspect the coil/distributor and will be sending the distributor in for refurbishing. The carb was really clean and looked good. Original Distributor from 1969 has had a hard life so it appears.
