Case 2290 hydraulic problems

I have a case 2290 and am having some trouble with the hydraulics. They worked fine when i put the tractor away for the winter and this spring they weren"t working properly.I am still learning how this tractor runs and operates so i am not very familiar with how its systems work.

When I have the planter ( JD 7000 4 row )attached and try to lift it up, i pull the lever back and it will rise a couple of inches and stop. I have to release the lever back into the neutral position for a few seconds, and then pull the lever back. It goes up another couple of inches and stops again. I have to keep repeating this process until it is all the way up. When i have the planter locked up, the cylinger would go up very slowly and then stop. I would have to rock the lever as i have previously mentioned. There were several times where the cylinder started to extend like it should, but stopped halfway through. Now that i have replaced the filter elements, the cylinder comes down fine and goes back up better than before with the planter locked in the up position, but does not have enough force to push the planter up so the the lock pin can be removed. I have tried using both sets of remotes and am having the this problem regardless of which set it is connected to.

I replaced the filter elements about a week ago and am still having this problem. The oil that cam out was pretty bad looking and when i replaced the filter elements, i was able to scrape out about a handful of shavings/flakes out of the bottom of the housing.

I have also tried to adjust the flow control and got no response. The steering and shifting are all working fine so i dont believe that its a pump problem.

Any thoughts/suggestions as to what the problem might be or where to start looking?

Thanks

You may have a problem with the hose couplers. Had the same problem ounce, it drove me nuts. Some couplers dont match properly with the ones case uses, or they can get worn down so they dont release all the way and when the oil flows through they snap shut like they are disconected.
Try raising it til it stops, then drop it just a fraction and try raising it again. If it goes up in jerks like that it will probly be the couplers. never had a problem with the ones on the tractor, only had to change the onnes on the hoses.

Your tractor uses a pressure compensated pump for the remotes. It sounds like the pressure compensator on the pump is sticking. This allows for pressure only for an instant after the lever in moved. With the compensator sticking it does not detect a pressure drop, (when the lever is moved) and there for does not tell the pump to start pumping. The experts will here will know more than I, but with my experience with closed centered system and pressure compensators this sounds like it could be your problem.

When I move the lever, I can see some "jerking" of the hydraulic lines. Would this change what the cause may be?

I would absolutely eliminate the couplers as being the problem before you dig into the tractor. The guys are absolutely correct about the incompatability of some couplers with the OEM Case females. They act exactly as you describe. The compensator could be an issue (although rare) but the others should be ruled out first. A lot of us have run into the coupler issue. mEl
