Need opinions on a 5250 CIH

Looked at one at Schimdts. West of Andale, Ks. Front loader, MFD, 5400 hrs powershift, Cab, left hand reverser w/o neutral. A little rough cosmetically seems okay in the 30 minutes I messed with it. Big leap from the open 970. Trans seemed solid and smooth, Park brake works. Should I have it dynoed? to check HP and Pto.
Flame away, Tom

It seams that you spent an adequate time with it. Request the dealer to dyno it. It will cost him little to do so if it makes a sale. If the tractor doesent perform to expectations, you have the choice and know exactly what you have. The 5200 series were much better than the 5100 series Maxxums. It's hard to beat the performance of a 970, but I have seen 5130s whip a 970s for overall daily production, 2wd/2wd. You will be making a big step forward as you said, with the 5250MFD. How many hrs. on your 970, and what year? The Acg.

as far as cosmetics i have seen many that looked rough, it looks like the primer was of poor quality and paint coming off in places. A fellow down the road had one and the only bad thing he had to say was some electric control box went bad and instead of it having a plug in they(shop he took it to) to hard wire a new one in. last i knew that tractor had 15000 hrs. on it at his auction sale and that was the only major work done to it. it was his only loader tractor and got used everyday, so it must have been pretty reliable. good luck with whatever you decide.

If the dealer will dyno it, let them. 5.9's and the Maxxum pto's gave very little trouble. I would look close at the MFD axle for oil leaks, parts are nasty expensive, it is usally more than just oil seals. If you can, push the loader down and get the front axle off the ground to check the trunion/king pins and bushings. Maxxums are nice tractors, they have good power and everything about them is handy.......tractor resale shows it.

I would agree with Agri King, check that front axle out good. We havent owned one but my uncle ran a 5140 on a loader for quite a few years and I think around 6000-7000 hours the front axle had major problems and was close to $15,0000 before it got out of the shop. Maybe the newer series is different, and his was a full time loader tractor run in tough conditions, other than that I don't think he had any problems with it.

A 5250 SHOULD have neutral in the left hand reverser... only the 5100 series had forward/reverse with no neutral...

We"ve got a 5240, got 5000+ hours now, so far so good, great chore tractor.

Get the dealer to put a hydraulic flow meter on it too... i think they give 17 gals/minute... iicr...

What front loader does it have??? Case 520 loaders are notorious for breaking loader pins up here... so much so that our local dealer (who doesn"t stock an ac belt for a maxxum) keeps 6 to 8 pins in stock at all times....
The paint is poor on my tractor too, despite spending most of its life inside, and the pressure washer makes a mess of the paint if you re not careful...

They"re good reliable tractors, i know a 5140 with 11000 hours on (and 140pto horsepower), and another at 16000 hours (although it"s rough now)...

Its a 92 Model, Looks as though the neutral didn't come until JJF1030000. Maybe just a switch change would do this. I added the link to the pics on tractorhouse. Tom

Its just broke in well. About 8000 hours. It had to set a couple times once for an engine inframe the liner seals had given up about six thousand hours. Then several years later and before These internet forums, the short roll pins in the spider pins sheared and did a fantastic amount of damage. That took about 200 hours of labor doing it myself and installing a complete set of new bearings thru out the trans, diff and pto. It's a yellow 8 speed. Think the dealer said 72 or 3 should check the SN sometime. Tom

4435,

I know CaseIH 520 loader were made by GB but... it"s amazing how different they are... similar but different, same attachment point style loader to tractor, but in a different location... mine are much higher...

makes it a much better loader i think... you can probably add oil/change filters with out cussing...

looks like a nice machine... i wouldn"t be scared of it.
