500 Thermostat Update

Ok this is what I found out today on using the A7634 stat on prior serial number 8060853. The book says to use 1 A7635 housing, 1 A7636 seal, A7637 ring, A7638 ring with brass screws, and A7639 gasket which is used with both housings. I did forget to run the housing number A7635.

Part numbers A7636 and A7637 changes to 310947r91 and that number is still available from CNH and so is thermostat A7634. Part numbers A17636 and A7638 are still available from Parts Depot. Locator showed Ritche Implement having 3 of the A7638.

I think you can reuse the old housing if you drill the holes for the ring. I ordered a thermostat from CNH to see what all comes with it. Don't know if this will win you a free meal or not Mel.

what holds the bellows type thermostat in ? Can you tell me if it was as reliable as the later set-up? any pros or cons? I have a few guys telling me to just leave them out-- any thoughts on that?

I have never actually replaced one on a 500. Looking at the picture above you will need the ring to hold it into place. I have a thermostat ordered and I will see if it comes with the seal. If it was my tractor I wouldn't run it without one. Diesels need to get up to a operating level to get best performance out of them. As in other post sure you could probably mount most any thing into the housing, but will if provide the correct flow of coolant. Seems you just replaced head gaskets and it important to get engine warm to re-torque the heads.
