530 triple range lost reverse

i was trying to get unstuck yesterday and was rocking back and forth and then lost reverse. All foward gears worked and i got it in the garage. I pulled the top cover and found no exploded gears? the Reversed shifiting fingers are attached to the rail and the setscrew is tight? i put it back together and it is the same? when shifted into reverse it just makes grinding noises like the reverse idler is not slideing far enough foward. i pulled the cover again and slid the reverse idler in and held it with a long screw driver. pushed starter button with fuel shutoff pulled and the starter makes the tractor creep along in reverse. put it all together again and it is still just grinding? is there a way to adjust that shifting fork? seems like all i could do is heat it up the the torch and bend it foward but i hate to do that and it might not release what slid back then i will be stuck in 2 gears.here are some pics of the tranny and cover? help any ideas?

the pics don't relly do it justice but the leading edges where all gears mesh together are pretty rounded off but i would think that would be common on a tractor that is old and beat like mine.

is the end of shifter in the center of sliders? last year i bought a case 630 and it only had 3and 4th the problem was coil spring under shifter that pushes up an shifter was broke allowing the bottom end of shifter to get uncalibrated to where i could never get in 1, 2, or reverse i had to replace spring and re set the slider and end of shifter

as Leboyteaux has stated, fork has likely moved on shaft. Definitely check that before heating and bending fork. My experience is that those forks will break before bending.

I've had to weld up and reshape many a shift fork for just that reason. Looks like another worn set, or at least the first one in the picture....little fuzzy on the details though.

well, i pulled the cover without disturbing the gears and measured all of their locations. then put the cover into the vise and measured the throw on the reverse idler. then i slid the reversed idler foward that distance and guess what.... the gears have only been meshing by about 10% of the width of the face if the gears  took the set screw out and it is in good shape and the tip is not busted off in the tapered hole so it looks like i will have to cut the end off of the shifting fork and weld it back on a full 1/4 of an inch further foward. it is wierd because i relly don't see a lot of wear on the fork or coller where it fits into the gears. just on the rounded off tips where they first meet.

Gus, unless you have an additive in your gear lube like Lucas Hub Seal, the lube in the bottom of the case looks a bit suspicious, like an oil and water emulsion. May want to change it out while your at it.

mine did not seem bent at all but i cut it off and welded the fork back on 1/4" foward and it is now throwing the gear foward far enough that it is meshing into the remaing teeth on the gears. it was kind of a dicey move and i struggeld to get the cover on but it seems to be working. beats the alternative.
