dc steering grears

Does anyone know if at all possible the gears in the steering box can be bought new. Or does anyone have a way to build up the gears or other ideas. The adjustment screw in this box is as tight as it will go and it still has three or fout inches before the steering arm starts to move thanks.

Remove the steering arm from the shaft on the steering box. Mark the shaft at one point ant turn the steering wheel till you have rotated the shaft 1/2 turn and reinstall. This will locate the worm gear on fresh unused teeth... Gene

The adjusting nut doesn't do very much to take up play in the steering assembly. It is quite a job, but you have to take the transmission top cover/ steering assembly off and see what you're facing up close. It is usually easy to fix. You will probably also need to replace the bearings on the end of the steering wheel shaft, in fact that may account for much of your trouble. Don

Gene is right. The SC and DC were made with a full circle steering sector gear when only 1/3 of this was needed. This gives you a gear that could be repositioned twice. I think Gene's analysis of 1/2 turn is on the safe side because it has taken 60+ years to wear out that gear section and this adjustment will give you 60+ more. You will probably looking for a newer model about then! (<:

Just a note...the steering wheel is keyed to the upright shaft. You may want to turn the horizontal geared shaft roughly 1/3 or 1/2 a turn and then fine tune it to ensure you maintain the original steering wheel spoke directions (of course accepting 120 or 240 degrees off).

That is very interesting. I had never known That was put out by Case. Just knew from experience. Had only turned them about half way. Guess the wheel position would remain the same by turning 1/3 or 2/3 turns... Gene

Thanks guys I have never been that far into the steering of a dc and din't know that it was a full gear that you could reposition. Im familar with turning the full gears on farmalls and know that this can be done and will work. As for the bearings being bad I don't know because the shaft doesn't really wigle in the casing. All I'm really looking for is a steering system that you can drive with and not break your arm or fingers. Thanks again.
