Does the tractor have to be split into to replace the hydraulic pump

The pump is mounted to the back of the valve ahead of the left rear axle housing, not a real hard deal to replace. Get with a knowledgable parts man to get the right pump as there were GPM options and different setups for each and gear mesh can be affected with mismatched parts. mEl

When you say in back of the valve do you mean the housing where the filter is?

That is correct, it contains the regulator spools, the PTO valve and generally is the heart of the hydraulic system. It's maybe 12 x12" and fairly easy to remove and replace. mEl
