430 Diesel Hard time starting

Hi Guys,

I have a case 430 diesel. It had a hard time starting today after a good day of work.

It was turning over and smokes out of exhaust pipe. Had to pull the throttle level down to get it to fire.(hard time) Got it going but something does not feel right.

Could hear a banging noise and some white smoke. Bad fuel?

I put new fuel in about 2 weeks ago.

Any help with this problem would be appreciated.
 
MORE THAN LIKELY WATER IN THE FILTERS drain all 3 of them till good clean fuel is present... on my daily runner 430 , i will drain mine once a week ,, dont' matter what rain bow of color ,,, nearly every diesel thatyt came wandering up the drive looking for a caring home had draincock issues , like they had never been opened since the tractor was built ...
 

Thank you for your feedback. I hope were right with this. Easy to fix and a good maintenance practice.

It is my first diesel.

Steps

1. I will drain the Primary fuel filter ( wing nut type valve)
2. Final filter (Brass drain valve)
3. The water trap on the fuel tank.

I am I on track?


I am scared of losing the prime on the fuel system. Do I run the risk of losing the prime with the above steps?

How do you tell if you have water in the diesel fuel?
 
start at tank sump 1st, endING at plastic cap on filters , WHEN ALL DRAINED of water , VENT OUT ANY AIR last with the top brass screw ,, do all this WITH THE ENGINE TURNED OFF , and you will not lose prime ,, , good idea to have at least half a tank TO SPEED PROCESS... and you can easily tell the water unless it is nitetime ,, btdt
 
Thank you for your help. The tractor started right up. Did fined some water during the bleeding.

But I think I have a second problem.

I warmed the tractor up good. Drive it for about five minutes and it stopped dead.

Maybe the fuel filter gasket needs replacing.

Just before it dead it was running ruff again. Like one cylinder was not firing.

How do you know if you head gasket is gone?
