LA Question

Hi KSCASE

I note your call re the "LA" - with regards to your question . Yes all "LA" tractors came from the factory with the left hand clutch lever, and also all had a four speed transmission. The late model "LAI" industrial tractors were still 4 speed, but had a foot clutch. GREAT TRACTORS !!!

Alan:
If I read Dave Erb's book correctly, some of he earliest LA's did have a 3 speed transmission which is something I never knew. However, Dave says that differential brakes preceded the hydraulic ones which I know is incorrect. We had a 1951 which had differential brakes and I worked for an oilman in Kansas in 1978 who had a 1948 unit with hydraulic brakes.

My 1945 Case LA has 4 speeds on the shifter but only 3 in the box. It came out with Steel wheels and they removed the 4th gear.

Tom Railsback, Dave is NOT incorrect on the mechanical vs hydraulic brakes. My LA parts catalog G210 on page 84 shows "mechanical rear wheel brakes prior to tractor No. 5208165" ('48). These are expanding shoe type brakes. Then on page 86 of the same book shows "hydraulic rear wheel brakes tractor No, 5208165 to 5418607" ('48-'50) of which are expanding shoe type. On page 80 of the same book it says :Differential brake tractor 5418607 ('50) and after". These are mechanical disc type of brake. Therefore they did have mechanical brakes first and last but had hydraulic from '48 to '50. These are all differential wheel brakes and not the hand brake or the transmission foot brake. I do have a '48 with hydraulic differential brakes and a hand brake. Roger

They are not all differential brakes; differential brakes are on the ends of the differential shaft. They stop the drive chains which in turn stop the axles.
These are the ones which were introduced at 5418607.
Dave Erb said quote By August 1948 hydraulics were made available for the LA. . . . In December of the following year the original L-style brake with one foot control was replaced with differential brakes to assist in turning. Later LA brakes were of the hydraulic variety. unquote. What he was talking about, incorrectly, I might add, were the mechanical brakes in the wheel hubs which were available on the L starting in 1939.

I have never read anything about the LA ever having a 3 speed (not saying they didn't). I know the very first D's had a 3 speed trany. Am now curious when they went to the 4 speed.

from what I remember Tom the first "D"s with three
speeds were "C"s run back through the factory and
"redone" with "D" series tin work I believe most
were sent to Canada
