What if any changes were made in the 3 year production run of the 400s? I've heard the last year (1957) models are most desirable, but I don't understand why. I've looked at both gas and diesels, and would prefer a diesel, but have found an interesting late model gas.

Are the decals and metallic emblems (particularly the one on the nose) available?

Any gotchas I should be aware of before diving in? I have a a good bit of experience with the 30 and 70 series but have not worked on any pre-1960 Desert Sunset models.

Joe,

I am unaware of any changes other than the Super Diesels that came out in 1957. They had 4 1/8 pistons and slightly higher RPM than earlier models. Also they had a PTO brake and a bigger tool box that did not have CASE stamped on the cover. They also had a spot cast into the steering column for the eventual Case-o-matic lever that came out on the 800s. Apparently Case was trying to get rid of the last 400s and doctored them up a bit before introdcing the 700 and 800 models. Decals and emblems are still available through Don L or John Saeli or others in the Case magazines. I am not sure if there is a "Super" gas version of the 400. Don

Additional details to Don's post: My research indicates the 1957 gas did not receive the upgrades on the Super. Additionally, the Super 400 had a pressurized cooling system & a new engine block casting with A1111 PN --- non supers blocks were A6400.

Joe,

AS for a gas burner in the big 400, they set a new world record for fuel effeciency at Nebraska in 1955. Younger brother has a 55 model and it runs cheap for gas. The 400 diesel is obviously going to be more effecient, however, his gasser runs cheaper than some of the competitive diesels of the same size. You wont be disapointed in a good 400 gas or a diesel. They are as reliable as the 30 series.

The late gas tractors had the same upgrades as the diesel except for motor. It remained the same 251 gas. Late 57 gas and super diesels should start after serial #8106131, if I remember right.

Thanks a million Don, Jim, Wheat Straw and Brad. Your information is very helpful. I'm in the process of narrowing the list for my next project, and this 400 is definitely a contender. The other strong contender is a low-time 351.

Jim...I'm gonna have to work hard to make a 400 look as good as your Super Diesel.

Thanks again for all of the replies.
