530CK (w/ gas 159 engine) Blowing Coils

I have a 530CK with a 159 engine (Gas) that keeps overheating the coil when the key is left on for fairly short amounts of time. I have encountered 3 circumstances within the last 6 months when the coil has exploded.

This may be in part due to a poor rewiring job the previous owner performed; many of the wires are losing their shielding and the wiring from the generator to the voltage regulator has been left unhooked; which makes me think the voltage regulator may be bad. As a result I have been putting the charger on it periodically to keep the battery up.

If anyone is familiar with this, can you please provide suggestions, and possibly answer the following questions:

1. [b:116214b175]Does this unit utilize a 12V or a 6.5V coil?[/b:116214b175] I have been using 12V coils without an internal resistor. The original part # was a prestolite #200578 but they could not cross reference it.

2. [b:116214b175]Should this unit have a resistor (internal or external)? [/b:116214b175] The reason I ask is that it may have had one originally, but if it did, it has since vanished during one of the rewiring efforts.

3. [b:116214b175]Does it matter if the coil is mounted vertically or horizontally?[/b:116214b175] Its currently mounted horizontally.

4. [b:116214b175]Does anyone have a wiring diagram or electrical schematic that may help in rewiring the electrical system (or at least completing it)?[/b:116214b175] I have the one from the owners manual and exploded parts manual, but they are very high level.

Many thanks in advance,

Rich
