Thanks for all the ideas on wich plug to use. I have far less mechanical experience then you guys, but everyday i grab a wrench, im learning. It is obvious to me that I can learn , just by listening to others with many more years of wrenching then i have. I apoligize that i ask so many questions, and i do very much appreciate the time you guys give me. Thanks , Jim

You'll get so many opinions you'll be more confused after the question that before, but herd is what I've herd from an old "Geezer" who's repaired mags for 60 years. "Don't use cadmium plated plugs". He explained why but I don't remember the details except that it shortens mag life. My 2 cents worth.

Jim, My magneto repair guy says to use non resistor plugs and wires to get better mag life. I don't know if this is true or not, but mags are expensive to repair, so I'm following his advice. Don

My Case Model S Operators Manual says either AC type 45 or Champion J8 or equivalent.

AC being AC Delco

we used AC Delco R45's in ours with no problems

with AC spark plugs the R is for resistor,
the 4 is the thread size 14 mm and the 5 is the heat range on a scale of 0=Cold to 9=Hot Hope this helps Take Care,

45AC/J-8 Champion fits an SC not a DC. I agree with mEL on Autolites, I use 386's, next choice 86 or 87 AC and last D-21 Champ.

I use Autolite plugs in all my engines and have used standard tips and extended tips, the 3116 extended tip is my plug of choice but the 386 I believe is the standard if you prefer. I believe they equate to the Champ D16 and D15Y very favorably but in recent years the Champs have a tendency to foul very easily. mEl

I have been having poor luck with Autolite plugs for my DC's and SC's as well. If you ever flood the engine you just as well throw away the plugs. They start grounding out up inside the insulator. I have had to replace Autolite plugs that were less than two months old. I use Champion with the next higest heat range. Do you have any idea what causes this to happen?

Your saying that you use a 3116 Autolite for the "DC3"? And you have gotten better results?
(ps... i have a 49 DC3)

Yes, 3116 and having exactly the opposite results as LL, LL is a valuable contributor to this forum and his experiences are as valid as mine, I am an advocate of whatever works for you!! Maybe the gas is different in our area or something. For years I was a Champ advocate but in recent years Champs foul to easily and I have seen many other people with similar problems with Champs, incidently that is my lifes work, keeping tractors running and haveing to work with all makes and models. I use 3116 in our 467 CID DC3 puller without incident, don't even go with a cooler plug, the 3116 seems to handle the very high CR's and 115 octane fuel well. mEl

Couldn't agree w/ Mel any more. My experience exactly. When I do foul a plug, I use the torch on very low flame & burn the wetness out of it. Make them like new.
