No thermostat, my 49 DC manual devotes a whole page to controlling the engine temperature with "shutters" to control the air flow through the radiator.

My 49 DC did not have a thermostat, but I put one in by cutting out the center of the water outlet and installing a proper sized thermostat . Worked fine.

For whatever it is worth, with all of my D series tractors, it was usually larger pieces rust out of the heads that would stop up the top tubes in the radiators. Then of course there was minimal water flow. I didn't ever have trouble with the air fins stopping up.

When I bought my '49 DC the radiator neck did not accept a thermostat. It could have been changed at some point earlier in it's life, but the paint (and grease) on it matched the rest of the tractor.

I just looked it up in "Full Steam Ahead;" thermostats were not used until 1952.

I'm sure they did. Buy sometimes folks took them out if they were running hot. A bad attempt to fix a problem that needed to be fixed the right way. Usually on my dad's farm, very fine dust plugged the fins in the radiator. A goon blow gun and lots of air took care of that. You would often need to hold a trouble light on the opposite side of the radiator to see how plugged up it was, and clean it out good!

Welding Basics - by Curtis Von Fange. One of the most useful skills that an owner of older equipment can have is the knowledge and ability to weld. It seems like the older equipment can do a job, albeit slowly compared to newer stuff, but it tends to break more often. Many of the breakdowns are related to the implements that are being used: the disc, wagon or bushog are among them. Knowing how to fix stress cracks, reinforce weak joints by welding on steel support plates, or cutting and shaping parts and adapters out of raw stee
