I am going to look at a D14 on Tues.Can any of you give me an idea of problem areas to check for? All my experience is with the B and CA models. Thanks alot.

Check the Power Director very closely for wear. It should not engage at the very end of it's travel in Lo or Hi. Also, check the transmission 3rd gear very carefully--it's the trouble spot and weak link. Listen for any whining bearings in the transmission or final drives, too. Take it up the road and wring it out. These are dandy little tractors if the transmission hasn't been hurt. Good luck!

I went today to look at it,Third gear seemed fine,it went into and out of gear pretty well in all gears. The power director did not want to stay in high range if you held the lever foward it seemed to work fine.Is it possible the stop is not adjusted properly? It stayed in low range fine.Also can you tell me what the lever on the left side of the steering column under the one that works the hydraulics is for? Thanks again.

If the Power Director did not want to stay engaged in Hi range it"s a pretty good bet that the clutch plates are badly worn--this is common for Hi range. Sometimes it will stay engaged and work fine after the oil warms up. The lever on the left side of the quadrant sounds like the Traction-Booster lever. Does the quadrant have a bunch of notches in it? This lever can actually regulate the depth of an implement through the Traction-Booster system, which is one of the really neat things about the D14. The regular hydraulic lever works to raise/hold/lower--the Traction-Booster lever can be set to increase or decrease the sensitivity of the hydraulics. Hope this helps and good luck!

You"ll need to refer to a manual for adjusting the power director. It uses shims and adjustment can be made without splitting the tractor. The lever on the left is the traction boost lever. It"s used for setting the amount of pull required to engage the traction boost system. That system allows weight transfer of implements to the tractors rear wheels to help with traction. Again you"ll need a manual to use it properly. Transmission problems usually do not involve being able to put a tractor in gear, but rather the tractor staying in gear when there is engine braking like when going down a hill. It can be a real problem if it"s bad enough that the tractor pops out of gear anytime there is a reduction in the load a tractor is pulling.
