Scott You should have no groves in your shaft. The object you are referring to is a pillow block bearing assembly. If your shaft is groved inside of this assembly your bearings have run dry and galled up the shaft. Or your mount was loose and didn't let your shaft run true "straight" If I am understanding your post correctly.

Thanks Jeff, You understood my post correctly and thats what I needed to know. I will just fix the problem with the assembly and weld new metal into the shaft where it is grooved, and smooth it back out. I had to do the same thing for my John Deere B where the steering shaft goes thru the support yoke, can't even tell new metal was added when it was all done.
