WD45s started with S/N 146,607. Maybe you have a WD? or WD with 45 engine. WD engine has a large rectangular plate on the right side of the block. WD engine is 201 cid and the WD45 engine is 226 cid.

The tractor is a WD as best as I can tell from the info on the web site, just not real sure it is a WD engine, but believe it to be. According to serial WD18690 it shpuld be 1954 model. Have the original owners manual and registration papers fron the dealer

186,90x would make it a '54 WD45

that S/N would make it a 1949 according to my reference book....unless you are missing a last digit. The sure way to spot a WD motor is by the large plate on the right side of the engine block.

Eldon - yes, after looking it is a WD engine. Still can't figure out what is the deal with the main bearing shims being only on one side of the bearing cap. From best i can tell there shouldbe 4 shims under each side of the cap. Still wondering if the engine I have is the "older" or "newer" style. Mostly confused as the engine serial number does not conform to what the repair manual says.

Eldon - just reread the last message and realize made an error. From looking at the engine it is a WD.

As Eldon says, WD18690 would make the tractor a '49 WD. I too, would guess you're missing a digit. If you added a digit to the end; eg: WD186900, it would become a '54 WD-45. The fact that the engine serial number is prefixed with "45" indicates it is a WD-45 engine. I have been accumulating Tractor/Engine serial numbers for some time and your engine number would also place the year as 1954. According to my A-C repair manual, the WD-45 does not use shims on the rods as the WD does. Rod bearing clearance is attained with undersize bearing inserts. I found reference to the Engine #W45FG1001 in the I & T manual where it is talking about the change from shimmed to non-shimmed "Rod" bearings. I have no idea from where I & T got that odd serial number. Apparently, shims continued to be used for main bearing adjustment on WD-45 engines as they were on WD engines. I have yet to rebuild one of these engines (tho I do have one that needs it) so I can not give you any firsthand tips or advice. There are guys out there that do these engines all the time (for pulling as well as normal duty) and I would hope one of them would "chime in" here with more specific info.
