Please guys, DON"T EVEN THINK about dropping the
"cranks" down on these big diesels. So many guys will rebuild the bottom end by taking off one or more main bearing cap (and bearing) and then
the NEXT adjacent one to it so that they can slip/drive/bend the NEW MAIN bearing halves ito place. What they don't realize is that they've
OVERSTRESSED the Crank in the process, and probably induced VERY TINY stress fractures into the crank. Remember a crankshaft is an EXTREMELY
BRITTLE piece of metal; they don't make NEW cranks
for these old pullers. I've had to TRASH tractor/
dozer d/engines because the crankshaft did NOT pass the NDI (florescent dye) inspection. When you
build 150-300 (PTO) horsepower turbocharged engine
like I do (out of 70-125 HP stockers) the first THING I INSPECT is the Crank. PULL THE ENGINE
AND TURN IT UPSIDE DOWN TO REMOVE THE CRANK with a hoist!!!
