Hydrolic oil level with new loader rams

I recently installed a loader on my '52 WD. Do I have to have the loader rams fully extended when I check the hydrolic oil? I other words, does the oil level need to read "full" when the rams are fully extended? Or do I just extend the draw bar lift rams when checking the hydrolic oil?

Will having both sets of rams extended cause me to overfill the hydrolic resovor?

Thanks, BF

What Steve says is true on 'most' tractors ;-) On the WD line the hydraulic level is checked with the rear lift rams extended fully. In your situation, more information is needed. If the loader rams are operated through an added flow-through valve and you have installed an oil return line to the reservoir, I would fill the reservoir to the full mark with the rear lifts fully extended and the loader rams at half-mask. If you are using the existing pump controls and no oil return, it will depend on the size of the loader rams. You'll have to judge what's best in that case. Filling the reservoir with the loader ram retracted and risk draining the reservoir when they fully extend, filling with the loader rams fully extended and risk overflowing the reservoir (which will spill into the engine clutch area) when they fully retract, or some compromise such as the half-mask approach I mentioned earlier. Good luck and let us know what works for you!

"most" tractors you check the oil level at rest with the rams in the lowered (ground) position. the tank should have capacity that when the rams are retracted the "extra" oil will not overfill the tank, and when "extended" there is enough capacity in the tank that the pump will not run out of oil.
