I have a follow-up question along the same line as Matt's... one of the top links on the aftermarket 3-point hitch on the '54 WD45 broke for no apparent reason (I haven't had anything hooked up the 3-point yet). It broke right under the U-connector at the top. The local TSC has Ford top links that appear to be identical to the ones on my tractor, except the U-connector at the top is slightly narrower. They have numerous bags of spacers, though, so I'm sure it will fit on the lift arm. Will any top link work as a replacement part on a 3-point system, or are the parts really brand-specific?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Matt, what are you asking for your 3-point system?

links are not brand specific. you need to get the right catagory hitch (the hole side must be right, 3/4 or 7/8) and the length must be correct, or adjustable to the correct length. a little side play in the link will not hurt. i would not worry about the shims unless you are way off. it dont need to be tight.
--on the lower arms, i bought a set at Farm Store that are made in Chine, RED for a 8N ford, and put them on an Allis B. Just make sure the hole size are right for your Catagory of equipment.
