Bill,
With the engine off, the wire coming from the starter feeds in to the + side of the amp gauge, then through the gauge and out the - side to feed whatever needs voltage (lights, ignition etc.) . The cut out relay shuts off the voltage that would go back into the generator. When the engine is started, the output from the generator energizes the cutout relay to allow generator voltage to back feed to the - side of the amp gauge and to everything needing voltage (lights, ignition et.). Excess voltage goes through the amp gauge out the + side to the starter then into the battery to charge it back up. The resister on the light switch is adjusted manually to regulate how much voltage goes to the field magnets in the generator. (more voltage in = more magnetism = more voltage out to the battery) Soooo only one wire should be on the + side of the amp gauge (from the starter). Resister wire from light switch hooked to the Field on the generator. Bat post on cutout relay hooked to + side of amp gauge. My guess is that the cutout relay is wired wrong to the generator (backwards)and the light switch is wired wrong to the amp gauge.
I hope this explains the system and why yours doesn't work! Duey
