The inserts and caps use four shims on each side on new shaft and new inserts. The bearing inserts should stand out above the block or rod and caps .0055 on each side. This gives .0015 standout with all shims in place and assures a tight fit between the insert and block, rod, and caps. When more than two shims are removed from each side the parting surface of the insert must be filed away .002 for each shim removed. The insert will not crush more than .0015 and you can distort or stretch the cap if you try to make it do so. A pack of 4 .0025 shims on each side on new parts is supposed to give you the correct crush and clearance. This is from a AC manual and the I&T manual.
