Raul. With the right series flywheel housing it would be possible to repalce a 4-71 with a 4-53. I can,t imagine why you would want to do this. The 71 engines run about 800 rpm slower than a 53. This might affect gear ratio and hydraulics. Also the 71 was a much better engine than the 53. I am a retired Detroit Diesl mechanic and an instructor of Diesel Mechanics at our local community college. Total of 45 years experience with these engines. Send me an email and I will help you get that 4-71 running right. Jim Bute

Thanks Jim and Steve

I do understand about the loss of power, but the fact that I can have a running 453 in my dozer for next to nothing was tempting me. I have to be careful about dumping a bunch of money into this very old and partially obsolete machine. I am going to have to sell my youngest to pay for some of the small clutch parts like the camshafts for the master clutch (part no. 040219) and the links for the master clutch sleeve (part no. 040222). I also need a pressure plate for the clutch. I sort of have to be reasonable or i will invest several times its worth.

If anyone can help sourcing, I would be grateful.

thanks

I know of a good running 4-71 that can be had for short money, it is an older marine setup
