Brief history. This tractor hasn't run since the 90's. Put all new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, condenser 12v coil as I am going to convert it. Just running off a 12v fully charged battery. All wiring new. Boiled and cleaned carb. I got it running and it ran really well. Power washed it and the problem began. It starts and runs for a couple of seconds, sputters dirty looking grey smoke and quits. It did this once before and I took the carb off and cleaned it again and it ran great. But now the problem is back. I have spark to all cylinders and the cap and wires are dry. Good gas flow to the carb. Gas is clean. I think the carb needs a new float needle as it will drip gas when turned off. It wants to run but it's all show and no go. Any help appreciated. Thanks

Ya Hoo! it runs. Since I had another tuneup kit I pulled the condenser and points. Looked at the old points and cleaned them thought I would just give them a try. Fired right up. I really thought it was fuel related.

Really glad to hear that. Way easier than cleaning the carb and fuel tank out.

I pulled the gas line at the carb and drained the tank using a clean white rag as a filter. Everything was clean. Took the carb apart again still no go. I have a kit ordered.

I thought about the gas tank. When I checked the flow to the carb I ran the gas into a clean container to check for particles. I did originally clean the tank out and it seemed to be clean but I know it doesn't take much. As for plans. I have none really for it. I have always wanted one and now I have two. This one came with a woods belly mower, 1bottom plow, sickle mower, and cultivator. You have to love these old tractors or why would you have one?

Since the tractor sat for 22+ years I would say it's very likely that the fuel tank is part of your culprit. You said that after you cleaned the carb the second time it ran great.... For a while now the problem is back. I think you are building up fine particles in the carb that come from the inside surface or the fuel tank. Since the G has a small engine mounted on back with the fuel tank on top, try running a different tank to the carb for a little while after you clean the carb again. You also say that the carb leaks fuel after a while so if cleaning of the float needle and needle seat didn't work go ahead and replace them. So what's your plan for the G anyway? they are such weird and fascinating looking machines!
